Chapter 19
NOW
I didnât want to die. Scared as I was when Evaâs car went hurtling down the precipice at the side of the road, Iâm not sure I was as riddled with fear as I am now. The look in Adamâs eyes scream murder and no matter how much I begged, or how much I pleaded, how soft I spoke or how serious my tone, he was not listening.
Throwing the car into park, he turned to me, an indecipherable look etched into each corner of his face.
âGet out of the car.â
Now, I wasnât so sure. âFuck that,â I hissed. âIâm not getting out of the car.â I crossed my arms over my chest and stared at him.
âWerenât you just begging me to stop the car so you could get out. Now the car is stopped and you can get out.â
Adam stepped out of the car and walked around to my side. I wrapped my arm in the seat belt. He was going to have to drag me out of the car to murder me. There was no fucking way I was going to simply walk towards my death. If he was going to go all psycho-ex on me there was going to be plenty of physical evidence in his car to clean up.
âI promised I wouldnât hurt you. So far I have kept my word. Right? Letâs talk.â
âI can hear you fine from where Iâm sitting.â
Adam exhaled and looked at me the way you look at a three-year-old throwing a temper tantrum.
âI forgot, Iâm just some asshole to you.â
I scoffed.
âYouâre one to talk.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âIt means that you decided I was an asshole a long time ago. I donât remember whining about it. And I certainly didnât kidnap you to talk it out!â
âNo, you just wrote me off like I was some loser!â
âI wrote YOU off?â Obviously he was living on a whole different planet. One without oxygen. âWhen half the school thought that I ran a car up a tree to murder your sister who did you believe?â
His stare became cold and distant.
âI just followed the evidence,â he said carefully, and I could see it again, the disbelief, the blame, the hate. At least this time, he was trying to blink them away.
âYouâre just like the rest of them, Adam. You donât give a damn what really happened. You just want someone to blame who isnât you. You want someone to hurt the way that youâre hurting.â And I got it. How could I not? His sister got seriously hurt, for crying out loud.
He stumbled back and blinked several times.
âYou almost killed my sister. What? You expected me to stay with you after what you did. If anything, you should be grateful.â
The vein in the side of his head was throbbing, but nothing like the way my brain felt like it was being pummeled with a sledgehammer. Grateful? Was he serious?
âYouâre acting like I wasnât hurting too.â And I was. Not even so much physically as emotionally.
